Step 1: Style

The first step is to decide what style of wedding band you want you can choose between a classic plain band, a diamond cut band, two-tone bands, diamond set, or shaped bands. The one you choose is completely up to your style. For a woman though you may also have to factor in your engagement ring, for example, if your engagement ring features a rather big solitaire stone a shaped band may be best to fit comfortably around the stone rather than trying to have a normal band lay flat. However, if you have an engagement ring with a lot of stones then a classic plain band may be your favourite choice to balance it out. For men usually, the plain options are the best especially if you have a hands-on job, in recent years there’s been an increase in men choosing a diamond cut or two-tone band as it can add a bit more interest to the ring rather than a plain metal band.

Step 2: Metal

Often the choice of metal can be overwhelming as there are so many to choose from, so here are our tips. If you have a hands-on job and still want to wear your wedding ring every day then spend that extra money on a more durable metal such as platinum or palladium, or if you like the look of platinum but want to keep to a bit more of a budget white gold can be a good alternative. Again this is another choice where you should keep your engagement ring in mind as most women like to have the same metal in both so they match seamlessly together, as well as men should also keep the engagement ring metal in mind as some couples like to have the same metal in all engagement and wedding rings so they have a special link and a matching pair.

Step 3: Profile

This is probably the first selection that is less based on your style and more about your comfort. You can choose between the different styles of court profiles which all have a more rounded inner edge so would be more comfortable to wear for long periods but there are also the flat or d-shaped profiles which sit flat against the finger, you would need to be sure of your ring size before you buy as they are less forgiving about size as the various court profiles.

Step 4: Width

The width you choose is fully based on your style again, however traditionally 2-4mm is the average width for a woman’s wedding band, and men’s vary between 5-8mm. You can choose the width you'd prefer but don't forget to consider how big your fingers are as a large width may look out of place on smaller, dainty hands. Also, consider the style ring you're going for, a plain band can be made in pretty much any width but diamond cut, diamond set, or two-tone bands may have limitations to how thin or wide they can be.

.

Step 5: Ring size

Getting the correct ring size may be the most important step of the whole process as you can design your dream ring, but if it doesn't fit, you need to worry about resizing it. At Johnsons Jewellers we offer a range of sizes so you're sure to find the right fit. You can measure your ring size at home with our helpful guide or come into the store and our expert team will measure and help you find that perfect fit.

.

Step 6: Personalisation

Personalisation is important so you know your ring is individual to you, this comes at various steps throughout the process depending on the type of ring you choose for example if you picked a diamond cut or two-tone ring at the start then you will need to decide what pattern you want, same with the diamond set bands, you will need to decide what design you want the diamonds in. The shaped wedding bands will require you to find the perfect shape to fit around your engagement ring, another decision that may be best for you to make in-store to find that perfect one. There are also many personalisation options with the plain classic band that you may not have considered such as finish you can choose whether you want a polished, matt, or brushed finish which will also depend on your style. The one personalisation you can add to any ring is an engraving, this enables you and your partner's rings to be truly unique as you can have a date, word, or phrase engraved on the inside of your wedding band, truly adding that unique final touch.
