Jewellery is the finishing touch to any outfit and can be the most sentimental of possessions so it is essential to keep it both looking its best and lasting a lifetime, especially if you want to hand down a sentimental piece to the next generation.

Keep your jewellery clean and dry

Cleaning your jewellery is essential to keep it looking its best. But it’s essential you clean it properly to not damage it. How to clean your jewellery will depend on the metals and gemstones as some you will need to be more gentle with. We recommend you clean your jewellery with proper jewellery cleaners specific to the metal or gemstone as many cleaners can contain chemicals that may damage the gems and metals. However, if your jewellery just needs a quick shine up at home then it’s best to use warm water and mild soap with a gentle cloth or brush especially with soft materials like pearls which can be easily scratched.

In-store, we stock a range of Connoisseurs Jewellery Cleaning Products which offer specialist cleaning products for whatever material your jewellery is made out of as well as cleaning equipment such as polishing cloths.

Keep away from sweat and steam

Moisture and sweat can discolour your jewellery especially if you swim in a pool with chlorine. If you’re a frequent gym goer, we recommend you keep a small cloth bag or small jewellery case in your bag so you can keep your jewellery safe and protected while exercising. As well as taking your jewellery off before you shower. For small travel jewellery storage, we recommend the Wolf Maria White Zip Case as it has room for all different types of jewellery and can fit in a bag.

Avoid contact with lotions or perfumes

Precious metals, coloured gemstones and pearls are very sensitive to chemicals. So make sure you put on any skin products or perfume before you put on your jewellery. Some cosmetic chemicals can cause permanent surface damage to gemstones. If your precious metals become exposed to any chemicals, rinse and wash off any residue with a gentle cloth.

Get insurance

The best way to care for your jewellery is to make sure you have insurance, especially on expensive or sentimental items. That way if your jewellery is lost or stolen you know you can be sure you don’t lose your money and can fix any damage to your precious pieces. You can find out more on our Valuations Page if you want an insurance valuation to give to your chosen insurance provider.

Store your jewellery properly

When you aren’t wearing your jewellery keeping it in proper storage can prevent damage and discolouration as well as keep them safe. The best jewellery storage option is a designated jewellery box with different compartments to separate pieces to reduce the risk of tangles and damage. However, if you don’t have a jewellery box keep the padded box or cloth bags the jewellery came in as a storage solution. We can recommend the Wolf Jewellery Boxes as they are both secure and offer many shapes and sizes for however big your jewellery collection is.
