The word Aquamarine is derived from the Latin word "Aqua", meaning water and "Marina" meaning the sea. Aquamarine is the blue variety of Beryl, and forms in terminated crystals (six-sided crystals). It has a hardness rating of 7.5-8 which means it isn’t as durable as diamonds but is still durable enough for jewellery as long as you avoid big knocks.

Due to its association with the sea, there are many beliefs and traditions, known as “The Sailors gem” it was believed to protect sailors from the perils of the sea and guarantee a safe voyage. Said to be sacred to the Roman god of the sea, Neptune. Aquamarine is also linked to the zodiac sign Pisces due to its sea like quality.

Aquamarine stones come in various green-blue hues and can vary from a pale colour to a rather vivid blue, the colour can be dependent on the heat treatment the stone has been exposed to as the heat can reduce the greenish tint to the stones and bring out a gorgeous blue colour. This means that Aquamarine jewellery can be purchased at various price points as the paler hues are usually cheaper than the more vivid ones.

.Aquamarine’s beautiful serene colour is said to be calming, helps with the release of fear and bringing of clarity. It is also thought to enhance the happiness of marriages as well as increase courage, love, hope and good health therefore it can be the perfect ‘something blue’ for your wedding day.
