When buying a watch, you often pick a watch that will look good and fit your style as well as a watch that has all the functions you will need. But you don’t necessarily think about how to take care of your new timepiece. So here are our top watch tips to keep your timepiece ticking along.

Keep it clean

As well as keeping your watch looking good keeping it clean can actually prolong the life of your watch as over time the dust and dirt could make it into the mechanism of your watch shortening its lifespan. To clean your watch at home, we recommend using a soft damp cloth or a dry polishing cloth to keep it sparkling. You should never use soap or chemicals to clean your watch; otherwise, they could damage both the piece's exterior and interior.

Keep it wound

It’s important to keep your watch ticking even if you’re not wearing it. If your watch stops for a prolonged period of time it could cause the gears inside to seize up or the lubricants to dry up and cause damage internally which could turn into a costly repair. When winding your watch, it’s also important to take it off your wrist as trying to wind the crown while still wearing it can cause the stem to become bent or even snap. A Wolf Watch Winder does this job perfectly for more information on them here's our Blog Post guiding you through their benefits.

Avoid contact with lotions or perfumes

Precious metals, coloured gemstones and pearls are very sensitive to chemicals. So make sure you put on any skin products or perfume before you put on your jewellery. Some cosmetic chemicals can cause permanent surface damage to gemstones. If your precious metals become exposed to any chemicals, rinse and wash off any residue with a gentle cloth.

Keep it dry

Most modern watches come with some degree of “water resistance” which is usually indicated by a number of meters or ATM. It’s important to understand what this number means, just because your watch says its water resistance to 10 meters doesn’t mean you can hold it under 10 meters of water. Here’s our guide to watch water resistance:

- ≤3 ATM / ≤30m: Splashproof and waterproof in small amounts of water.

- 5 ATM / 50m: Can be submerged in water. Suitable for shallow swimming.

- 10 ATM / 100m: Suitable for swimming, snorkelling and water sports.

- 20 ATM / 200m: Ideal for scuba diving.

- 30 ATM≥ / 300m≥: Professional and deep sea diving.

Store it safely

Even if you wear your watch every day you will still need somewhere to store it overnight or when you want to switch it for another watch, that’s why we recommend having a wolf watch box, a wolf watch winder or a wolf watch roll for watch storage. If you have many quartz/battery-powered watches then getting a watch box would be your best option as it keeps them all safe and secure and away from dust and dirt. If you have an automatic watch then a watch winder could be the best option for you to make sure your watch is always wound and ready to wear. And for when you’re on the go a watch roll is the best travel option as it is compact but also secure.

Get it serviced regularly

If you want to make sure your watch gets the fullest life possible then you should make sure it gets serviced regularly. We usually recommend you get your watch looked at by a professional watchmaker every 3-5 years, however, it does depend on the watch brand and model so is best to ask an expert for advice specific to your watch. It is also very important to note you should never take apart your watch by yourself as you can get dust in the gears and can cause more damage as well as potentially using the wrong tools. Here at Johnsons Jewellers, we have an expert team of watch makers that can repair and service your watch so you know your time piece is in safe hands.

Understand the watch

The best way to get the most out of your watch is to read your watch’s manual as this will inform you on how to use your watch most effectively as well as tell you the specific specifications and movement in your watch to enable you to care for it properly.

This is just general advice and will change dependent on the model of watch you own so if you’d like specific advice you’re more than welcome to come into the store or call to talk to our expert watch team.
